GUINNESS GIRL 2013

Update of last-year's version. Also a stark reminder that I need to update this site more often...

It's funny how things work out in Hollywood sometimes.

Guinness Girl

GUINNESS GIRL
saturday, 17 march 2012
Love girls who like Guinness. This girl is no one in particular, mostly I just felt like yet another redhead would be a bit too consistent (I've drawn a lot of them lately) and a bit too cliche. Trust me, there are a LOT more brunettes in Ireland than redheads.

BARONESS DEJA

Another portrait, of sorts. My friend Deja as the Baroness form GI Joe, whom she dressed as for Halloween. Gotta love the nerdy girls.

Redhead Redux Commission
friday, 2 september 2011
A very recent commission to revisit the older redhead sketch. With more detail, and of course, more limbs. Seems the client had inhereted a small plane and is in the middle of a project to rebuild it, complete with the addition of some good old-fashioned nose art. Well, not SO old-fashioned, really, but a fairly classic take on a pinup nevertheless. She'll be about twenty-two inches tall on the engine cowling when printed and mounted. All of the additional details – type of shoes, stockings, bows, etc – are to the clients specifications.

Succubus redux

Couple more versions of her hotness.

Maybe not every artist does this, but I love exploring variations on my own work. I'm not convinced any particular version is the most perfect final one. Maybe it's a trait I picked up from graphic design and production where context - how a thing is used and where it is - often determines changes to the thing itself. A logo or some piece of key art, for example, might change color or arrangement depending on the space it has to fill or other factors.

Maybe I just like noodling and second-guessing myself :)

Succubus

Posting more than once in a month? Me? Hell, I'm on a roll. Blame a thread over at the Drawing Board (and Bentan, specifically, for setting the bar) for kicking my butt to get some themed artwork done (and BEFORE the event has come and gone, no less). Just the line work for now (Adobe Illustrator, Wacom tablet) but color may come. I'd like to do a couple more for the thread, so keep your fingers crossed that my schedule holds out.

This one is noteworthy because I don't often get this racy. The trick is finding the right line (no pun intended) between creating a character and outright sex. For me, the best, brightest pinup art starts with character and pushes up to the point where the sexiness contributes to, but doesn't detract from, that character. I'm not always as successful as I'd like in finding that balance.

So, I practice, practice, practice.

Brewfest Babes
friday, 2 october 2009
More World of Warcraft related art, this time a handful of hotties partaking of some of the Brewfest offerings, complete with their own set of Tankards o' Terror. Posted here are the inks (which is actually Adobe Illustrator) and a shot at coloring (all Photoshop) because I really need to practice that more.

Yes, it's based on that classic forum photo of the three Oktoberfest babes and is an unreserved homage to it.

Ragnaros, jerk tourist
wednesday, 2 september 2009
I got this image into my head a few days ago and I just had to scratch the itch. I expect only World of Warcraft players will appreciate this, and it may only really strike a chord with WoW players in the LA area, but whatever.

I drove up to La Cañada to see the fire for myself and damn if there wasn't actual fire right behind actual houses and businesses. The incongruity really struck me, in the same way seeing a Warcraft raid boss traipsing through the real world might. That's about as much artistic justification as I can muster for this. Really, I just got the image in my head and had to get it out.

Anthony Citrano was gracious enough to give me actual permission (since I asked nicely - see, Internet: we can do our silly Photoshopping AND maintain the integrity of copyright) to use his photo for this. Please go visit his site and check out the rest of his work – he's quite a good photographer and the trip is well worth it. On a side note, I think this is the first time he's allowed this kind of mashup with his photos, so that's very cool of him.

Mickeyverine?

So, Disney is buying Marvel. Okay, fair enough. Makes a kind of sense, at first glance. Of course if all of the character licensing deals stay intact (Marvel Heroes stuff at Universal theme parks, for example) I wonder just how much Disney will be able to leverage their investment. Maybe it's like the Pixar deal, the future movie distribution deals alone look too tasty to pass up.

Anyway, I couldn't help but wonder how this new partnership might wind up changing details at Marvel...

New Art: Arithena

I've owed my friend Cathy a portrait of some kind for a long time now and I finally got around to getting around to it. I need to do more of this sort of thing. It's a lot of fun!

Scruffi and Jinxi
friday, 14 august 2009
What's a hunter without his pet? I've had Jinxi for a LONG time. I know it's counterintuitive to develop a sentimental attachment to a virtual pet, but Jinxi was one of my first pets and I just cannot bring myself to trade her in, no matter how many sparky lightning wolfs Blizzard tempts me with.

Also: BACKGROUND!

Scruffi, Tauren Hunter
saturday, 11 july 2009
Every rare so often I find the energy to build a little tutorial on the vector work I do. I like these partly because, as I was starting out avything likethis was invlauable to me and so I like to contribute when I can, and partly because I think my process is a little on the unusual side and I think someone might be interested to see a diferent way to do this. Also it's good practice for putting together book material.

Anyway, here's Scruffi, my Tauren Hunter World of Warcraft character, making his first appearance on this site (he's been posted in previous incarnations at my other site, livinglightning.com).

Welcome to the New Site
tuesday, 23 june 2009
I decided to start a separate site dedicated solely to my artwork. Right now it's jut the working kernel and I intend to adjust things and add bits here and there – nothing is set in stone here yet (my other site at livinglightning.com has seen a half-dozen evolutions since its inception), but I wanted to get something up in working condition for now.

So thanks for visiting, poke around the gallery, and enjoy your stay!

Below: a rare self portrait to inaugurate the site.
